In 2008, a new opal deposit was discovered near the town of Wegel Tena, in Wollo Province, Ethiopia. Wollo Province opals resembled those from Australia and Brazil's sedimentary opals, with a light background and often vibrant play of color. Opals from Wollo Province, referred to as "Welo" or "Wello", have become the dominant Ethiopian opal in the jewelry trade.
