Viking find of Thor's hammer found in Rømersdal on Bornholm

Mjølner, Mjollnir , Thor's hammer. Its name may mean "The Crusher" or "The Lightning One". It was forged by the dwarves Brok and Sindre, who also forged Frey's Golden Brush and Odin's Draupner. According to Snorri's Edda, its handle was a little too short, but otherwise it is the finest work the dwarves did. When Thor throws it, it always hits, and it always returns - like a boomerang - back to his hand.

With his hammer, Thor is primarily a demon fighter. He is almost always out killing giants or fighting the Midgard Serpent. With his hammer, he can also "consecrate", i.e. bring his goats back to life after they have been eaten, or bless brides and grooms or ship burials. It is conceivable that Mjölner was a fertility symbol in ancient times, linked to Thor's function as the god of lightning and thunder. At the end of the pagan period, many Æsir believers wore jewelry in the shape of Thor's hammers around their necks; this is a parallel to Christians wearing crosses as necklaces, and perhaps it was also a pagan manifestation against Christianity.
